Utah Teacher Fellow

Have you ever heard of Hope Street Group? Neither had I until I saw a twitter post about applying to become a teacher fellow for them. Let me give you a little intro: Hope Street Group was founded in 2003 by a group of people concerned about problems we face in the United States. Their organization just happened to be located on a street named South Hope Street in Los Angeles, CA so that's how their name originated. The mission of Hope Street group is to create "systematic, bipartisan perspective" to bring "innovative approaches and tools from the private sector to social systems" in order to focus on "actual outcomes and metrics." They have three systems they focus on: education, workforce, and healthcare. You can learn more about their organization here: http://hopestreetgroup.org/work/

In partnership with the National Network of State Teachers of the Year (NNSTOY), Hope Street Group began a Utah teacher fellowship this year! The whole point of the fellowship is to connect teacher voices with local and state policymakers to improve policy and drive positive change for education. Already, fellows have been active participants and driving forces behind current political issues like keeping Title IIA funds for professional development and the 'Our Schools Now' initiative.

Throughout the next few months, Utah teacher fellows, myself included, are striving to develop our professional learning networks, conduct focus groups, collect survey data, and lead discussions with state representatives about how to improve education in Utah. It's a huge task, but well worth the effort and I can't wait to see what the next few months will bring!
